Het fruit afkomstig van eeuwenoude wijnstokken in Gabutti (in Serralunga d’Alba), beleeft de Cappellano 2017 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris dat perfecte moment in de tijd, dat magische moment, waarop Nebbiolo van binnenuit schittert. Ik werd echt verliefd op deze wijn dankzij de gewichtloze kwaliteit van het fruit, zijn etherische persoonlijkheid en de zacht aanhoudende aroma’s van zoethout, rode bes, sigarentabak en bloedsinaasappel. Het fruit vervaagt nooit en de wijn streelt het gehemelte dankzij de fijn gepolijste en zijdezachte tannine. De 2017 is nu heerlijk op dronk.

Parker: With fruit sourced from ancient vines in Gabutti (in Serralunga d’Alba), the Cappellano 2017 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris occupies that perfect moment in time, that magic moment, when Nebbiolo shines from the inside out. I really fell in love with this wine thanks to its weightless quality of fruit, its ethereal personality and its softly lingering aromas of licorice, redcurrant, cigar ash and blood orange. The fruit never fades, and the wine soothes the palate thanks to its tannins that are finely polished and silky. The 2017 is drinking beautifully right now.
Cappellano prefers not to be reviewed and never to my knowledge provides tasting samples to wine critics. This is a bottle I purchased and drank in Rome, and I couldn’t wait to talk about it here, despite the winery’s long-standing no press policy. It’s a lovely expression and a masterful interpretation of a vintage that threw many curve balls. A very hot and dry summer led to an early harvest, something the Nebbiolo grape has difficulty with. It usually shows more complexity the longer the grapes stay on the vines. But this wine delivers extreme nuance and more. If you find a bottle, grab it.
